About Us

Paul J King Funeral Directors is a respected and growing independent funeral business with a reputation for delivering exceptional care, professionalism, and support to the families and communities we serve. As we continue to expand our presence across Essex and beyond, we are seeking an ambitious and commercially driven Business Development Manager to support the next stage of our growth.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Business Development Manager will be responsible for driving business growth, increasing market share, strengthening community relationships, and identifying new opportunities to develop the Paul J King Funeral Directors brand.

This is a varied and rewarding role that combines strategic planning with hands-on business development. Whilst the primary focus will be growing and promoting Paul J King Funeral Directors, the successful candidate will also support the Board in identifying and evaluating potential acquisition opportunities as part of the company's long-term expansion strategy.

We are looking for an energetic and motivated individual who understands the importance of reputation, relationships, and community engagement within the funeral profession.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement business development strategies to increase market share and brand awareness.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local communities, care homes, hospices, hospitals, solicitors, celebrants, and other key stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to increase funeral volumes and develop new revenue streams.
  • Promote the company's services, including funeral arrangements, memorial products, and pre-paid funeral plans.
  • Represent Paul J King Funeral Directors at community events, networking functions, exhibitions, and industry events.
  • Work alongside branch teams to support local marketing and community engagement initiatives.
  • Conduct market research and competitor analysis to identify growth opportunities.
  • Support the Board in assessing potential acquisitions and expansion opportunities.
  • Assist in establishing relationships with independent funeral business owners who may be considering succession planning or future sale opportunities.
  • Prepare business development reports and recommendations for the Board.
  • Help develop and maintain strategic partnerships that enhance the company's presence and reputation.

Candidate Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Proven experience in business development, sales, marketing, relationship management, or commercial growth.
  • Experience within the funeral profession is highly desirable but not essential.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong networking and relationship-building abilities.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to identify growth opportunities.
  • A proactive and self-motivated approach to achieving objectives.
  • Strong organisational and presentation skills.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a senior management team.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working within the funeral profession or a related sector.
  • Knowledge of pre-paid funeral plans and funeral services.
  • Experience in community engagement and local marketing.
  • Exposure to acquisitions, mergers, or business expansion projects.
  • Existing professional network within the funeral, healthcare, or care sectors.

What We Offer

  • An opportunity to play a key role in the future growth of a respected independent funeral business.
  • Direct access to and collaboration with the Board of Directors.
  • A varied role with significant autonomy and responsibility.
  • Competitive salary package based on experience.
  • Company car or car allowance.
  • Performance-related bonus opportunities.
  • A supportive and professional working environment.
  • Genuine opportunity for career progression as the business continues to grow.
