As our business continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced and commercially minded Financial Controller to join our senior leadership team at our Head Office in Maldon.
The Role
This is a key strategic and operational role reporting directly to the Board of Directors. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all financial activities across the business while providing sound commercial guidance to support growth, profitability, and long-term sustainability.
The Financial Controller will play an integral role in shaping business decisions, managing budgets, improving financial performance, and ensuring robust financial controls are maintained throughout the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the finance function across the business.
- Prepare and present monthly management accounts, financial reports, and performance analysis to the Board.
- Develop, monitor, and control company budgets and forecasts.
- Provide strategic financial advice to support key business decisions and future planning.
- Analyse business performance and identify opportunities for efficiency and profitability improvements.
- Ensure compliance with all statutory, regulatory, and taxation requirements.
- Manage cash flow, treasury, and working capital requirements.
- Oversee payroll, purchase ledger, sales ledger, and credit control functions.
- Develop and maintain robust financial controls, policies, and procedures.
- Support business acquisitions, investments, and expansion opportunities where applicable.
- Work closely with operational management to ensure financial objectives align with business goals.
Candidate Requirements
We are seeking a highly experienced finance professional who can demonstrate:
- Qualified accountant status (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) preferred.
- Significant experience in a Financial Controller, Finance Director, or senior finance leadership role.
- Proven experience managing the finances of a funeral business conducting approximately 1,000 funerals per year or more is highly desirable.
- Strong commercial awareness with the ability to influence strategic business decisions.
- Experience of budget management, forecasting, and financial planning.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong leadership and communication abilities, with confidence in presenting to senior stakeholders and directors.
- High levels of integrity, discretion, and professionalism.
